The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is indigenous to Central America, originally cultivated by the Aztecs for use in traditional medicine. They became associated with the Christmas holiday and are now popular seasonal decorations. Poinsettias are colourful plants that are usually grown indoors over Christmas. They are traditionally red but can also be white and pink. They like a bright position away from strong sunlight and draughts and are happiest when the temperature is about 18°C.
