Globe artichokes are statuesque plants with handsome silvery foliage which require a permanent place in the border or vegetable garden. They require a fertile, moist but well drained soil in a sunny but sheltered position. In the first year cut off any flower stems to focus the plant's resources on growing a good root system.
Harvest the buds before the flowers open when at the size of a golf ball to a tennis ball. Remove the fibrous hairy 'choke' before eating.
