Garden mint, also known as spearmint or Mentha spicata, is a popular culinary herb that is widely used in the UK and other parts of the world. It is a hardy perennial plant that grows up to 60 cm tall and has long, pointed leaves that are slightly fuzzy to the touch. It produces small, pink or purple flowers in mid- to late summer. Mint is easy to grow preferring moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, but can also tolerate full sun. Garden mint can quickly spread to fill an area. To keep it contained it is advisable to plant it inot a large pot and sink the pot in the ground.
In the kitchen, garden mint is used to flavour a wide range of dishes, including salads, soups, stews, sauces, and teas. It is also a key ingredient in the famous side dish, mint sauce, which is traditionally served with roast lamb.
