Adalia bipunctata (two-spotted ladybird) are the most well-known aphid munching beneficial insect. They have voracious apetites for all aphids (greenfly and blackfly) and can be used to control outbreaks of these pests.

Ladybirds also feed on other soft bodies pest insects such as thrips and spider mites. Control of these other pests is a bonus and ladybirds should not be relied upon alone to control these other pest insects. If thrips and spider mite are causing the problem, specific biologicals should be used for those pests.

Larvae vs Adult Ladybirds:

Ladybird larvae are best used outdoors as they will remain on the plants in your garden and hunt down the aphids where they like to hide. They eat even more aphid than the adult ladybirds. They come in containers along with buckwheat which keeps the larva safe during transport. Once released they will feed and grow over approximately 4 weeks, as they grow they will develop their identifiable orange patches on their flanks. The larvae are simple to apply.

Adult ladybirds could fly away after you purchase them so are best used in enclosed places such as greenhouses or polytunnels where they are able to fly between plants to find all the aphids.
