Corylus avellana (Hazel) is a large deciduous shrub or small tree. It has yellow autumn foliage and yellow catkins in spring followed by edible nuts in autumn. A common hedgerow plant it is good for wildlife and can be coppiced for stakes and binders to use in place of bamboo canes. Contorta is a particular corkscrew variety with highly contorted branches which make a really interesting feature in the winter garden and can be cut to add interest to flower arangements. Catkins appear in late winter. It holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
