Common oregano, or Origanum vulgare, is a popular herb that is native to the Mediterranean region but is now widely cultivated around the world. It is a hardy, perennial herb that grows to a height of around 30 to 60 cm, with small, oval-shaped leaves that are usually green or gray-green in colour. The leaves are highly aromatic and have a warm, slightly bitter flavour that is commonly used in cooking.
Common oregano produces clusters of small, pink, or purple flowers in the summer months, which are also edible and attractive to bees and other pollinators. It prefers well-drained soil and plenty of sunshine, making it a popular choice for herb gardens, as well as containers on balconies and patios.
