Matteuccia struthiopteris is a gorgeous lush deciduous fern, often called the shuttlecock fern for its upright feathery fronds like the feathers on a badminton shuttlecock.
It can grow up to 1.7m in height in the right conditions. This fern is easy to grow in most cool, moist, shaded positions except chalky. Mulch it well with leafmould. It looks wonderful near water or in a woodland setting. Remove the previous year's fronds in early spring.
