This Berberis (aka Japanese Barberry) is a thorny, deciduous shrub, grown for its foliage over its flowers. 'Compacta' is an evergreen, fast-growing, dense and compact variety with glossy, narrow, dark green leaves with a silvery sheen. Small, scented white flowers are produced in autumn.
