Ajuga are spreading ground hugging evergreen perennials which are useful for carpetting under trees and shrubs. They have mostly blue flowers on short spires and look good with spring bulbs coming up through the foliage. Black Scallop has very dark purple almost black leaves and blue flowers.

Another carex with an RHS Award of Garden Merit, Aurea is an evergreen sedge with arching narrow bright yellow leaves with green variegation. Low-maintenance and hardy it is useful for any situation except full shade and looks particularly good edging a pond.

Everest is a distinctive sedge that forms mounds of arching variegated leaves edged in white. It is happy in sun or partial shade and provides good winter interest.

Carex Evergold holds an RHS Award of Garden Merit. It is an everdgreen sedge which forms clumps of yellow leaves edged in green. Fully hardy and low-maintenance it is useful in any garden setting except full shade.
