HOW TO PLANT SEED POTATOES FOR AUTUMN AND WINTER HARVESTS
Most early potatoes take about 12 weeks from planting to cropping.
Potatoes planted outside in the ground in midsummer should grow and form tubers before the first frosts in autumn, especially in sheltered gardens.
Where there is a frost free-greenhouse, cool conservatory or bright porch, potatoes can be planted in August for harvesting at Christmas.
HOW TO GROW POTATOES INDOORS FOR CHRISTMAS HARVEST
Use a potato bag or barrel.
Half fill with potting compost.
Plant tubers, each with about 30cm (12in) of space.
Cover with 6 inches of soil.
As the foliage develops, earth up the potatoes with further compost until the container is full. Leave space for watering.
Keep well-watered and feed with a general-purpose liquid fertiliser.
Ensure the greenhouse remains frost-free, as potato foliage would be damaged by frost.
Remove dead foliage late autumn. Keep tubers fairly dry and leave in situ until needed at Christmas.
HOW TO GROW POTATOES OUTDOORS FOR CHRISTMAS HARVEST
Plant 5” deep and 15” apart, earthing them up as they begin to grow. Sprinkle slug pellets between the rows. Remove and compost foliage when it dies down in autumn.
On light soils in sheltered gardens you can protect by piling some earth up over the rows covering with straw to insulate the tubers until Christmas. In cold or wet conditions, lift the tubers and re-bury in a pot, in a frost free garage or shed. You could also store in the fridge or in bags in a cool shed or garage.
