Charity & Community

The Tate family strongly believe in our Sussex heritage and supporting the local community. We work with local schools and groups, much of which is through our community partnership with the local Lions Clubs. John Tate was a founder member of the Portslade and West Hove Rotary Club and Chairman of the Porthove Housing Association.

In 1992, Jonathan Tate built a museum to house the Newhaven Local and Maritime Museum charity at the Paradise Park garden centre in Newhaven. This was provided to the charity free of charge and continues to be let long-term at a peppercorn rent.

Our current projects include a Lions’ bookshop in our smaller in-town Mayberry garden centre in Portslade. Here, we collect and sell books in the coffee shop and all takings are donated to Lions’ local charities. We also operate several charity fund raising events throughout the year including Santa’s grottos, charity coffee mornings, car boot sales and charity carwashes. We support and encourage our staff members to raise money for local good causes that are important to them.
