Ann Winney, who runs Hurstpierpoint-based rescue Hurst Hedgehog Haven, spent Sunday 24th March at South Downs Nurseries with an information stand about local and national initiatives from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, and the simple steps customers can take at home to make it easier for hedgehogs to thrive in Sussex. “Ann was on hand to offer tips and advice, and the day was certainly a hit with our customers” says branch manager Craig Brookwell. “We know that urban hedgehog numbers are still in decline, so it really was lovely to see so many of our customers asking how they can help hedgehogs in our area.”

Tates of Sussex Garden Centres are one of the latest chains to adopt the ‘Hedgehog Heroes’ initiative from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, which invites companies and organisations to hand out information and special stickers for gardening equipment, to allow gardeners to look out for hedgehogs in their gardens.
