British Red Cross at South Downs Nurseries

Event Date: 9th May 2020

The British Red Cross celebrates its 150th anniversary this year on August 4th 2020, and they are hosting events across Sussex to celebrate the work of volunteers in Sussex over the years, such as the Lewes floods, Shoreham aircrash and the WW1 hospital at the Brighton Pavillion, for example as well as showcasing the current services provided locally.

These include mobility aid loans (such as wheelchairs and crutches), assisted hospital discharge scheme (collecting people from Royal Sussex County Hospital and taking them home), settling them in, ensuring they have food and drink at home, meaning they are less likely to be readmitted. They also offer first aid training and emergency response such as attending house fires where they arrive with the Fire and Rescue service and support vulnerable people to make calls to their insurance companies and have some warmth and shelter.
