As part of our ‘Autumn is for Planting’ campaign, this week we’re focusing on the benefits of planting trees and shrubs during autumn.
Trees and shrubs can transform your garden, from adding shape and structure to providing shade, seasonal foliage and value for wildlife. Planting them in autumn gives them time to establish, so they can flourish for many years to come.
Why Plant Trees & Shrubs in Autumn?
Planting trees and shrubs in autumn allows their roots to develop while the soil is still relatively warm, helping them to settle before the demands of spring and summer growth.
Autumn’s cooler conditions mean there is less risk of plants drying out quickly, compared with those planted during warmer weather and summer heatwaves. As young trees and shrubs require regular watering, seasonal rainfall can also help maintain moisture in the soil and support healthy root development.
Together, these conditions give newly planted trees and shrubs a gentler start, helping them establish strong roots ready for healthy growth when spring arrives.
Choosing the Right Tree or Shrub for Your Space
Before choosing a tree or shrub, consider the space available in your garden for your plant to grow. Different varieties have their own preferences for soil, sunlight and moisture, so choosing one that suits its planting position will help it to thrive.
It is also important to consider the plant’s eventual height and spread. Smaller ornamental trees and compact shrubs complement smaller gardens, whereas larger varieties can provide shade, shape and structure in more spacious areas.
Evergreen shrubs provide year-round foliage, while deciduous shrubs can bring seasonal interest, flowers and autumn colour to your garden.

Where Can I Plant Trees & Shrubs, and What is the Best Approach?
Trees and shrubs are generally best planted between October and April, provided the ground is not waterlogged or frozen.
- Water container-grown trees and shrubs thoroughly before planting.
- Soak bare-root plants for around 30 minutes.
- Loosen any compacted soil around the planting area to help improve drainage.
- Dig a hole no deeper than the root system, but around three times as wide.
- Gently loosen tightly packed roots on pot-bound plants before planting.
- Position the plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill with the excavated soil, gently firming it around the roots.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
- Stake larger or top-heavy trees if they need additional support while establishing.
Caring for Newly Planted Trees & Shrubs
Newly planted trees and shrubs can be vulnerable to drought stress while their roots establish.
Water regularly during dry spells and check the soil around the roots, as the surface can sometimes appear moist while the soil below is dry. Keep an eye out for signs of drought stress, such as wilting or browning foliage, particularly during prolonged periods of dry weather.
During wetter weather, avoid overwatering and make sure the soil does not remain waterlogged, as roots need both moisture and oxygen to remain healthy.

If your tree was staked when planted, check the stake and ties regularly while it establishes. Strong winds can cause newly planted trees to move in the soil, which may disturb developing roots and slow establishment. Check your plants after particularly windy weather and make sure any stakes and ties remain secure without rubbing against or restricting the trunk. The stakes can be removed once your tree has developed sufficient root growth to support itself.
You should also watch out for weeds and grass growing close to newly planted trees and shrubs, as they can compete for available water and nutrients. Applying a layer of mulch around the planting area can suppress weeds and retain soil moisture, helping to support healthy plant growth. Keep mulch away from the base of stems and tree trunks, as prolonged contact can cause the bark to rot.
