Portslade’s Vale Park has had a makeover thanks to the hard work of a Scout Group, and the generosity of a local garden centre. Friends of Vale Park have been working hard to improve the appearance of the open space for the residents, and the decision to hold a community planting morning was made as the next step of the process.
14th Hove (St Andrews Portslade) Scout Group was approached, as their hut is in the area, and as Leader Sally Thorley explains, the Beavers were keen to get involved, and Tates’ family run Mayberry Garden Centre were also on hand to assist.
“We decided that the best thing to do was to create a flower border to brighten up the Scout Hut. With the help of Mayberry Garden Centre we were able to plant flowers and bulbs, as well as create seed bombs from seeds and compost also from Mayberry.”
Vic Knight, Plant Manager at the Portslade Garden Centre who put together the donation for the Beavers explained that this was a great local project to support.
“We are always keen to get involved in the community around our garden centre, and this is less than a mile from our doorstep. It’s great to be inspiring the next generation of gardeners too.”
Another 100 bulbs were also planted around the wooded area of Vale Park, and the Beavers hope to have flowers all the way through until autumn.
The Scout Group and Garden Centre hope that this is one of many projects the two can do together, with the Scouts holding a charity car wash on April 1st at Mayberry to raise money for new equipment.
